The “Dream Job” That Wakes You Up Screaming
Let’s be real for a second—job hunting is exhausting. So when a recruiter slides into your DMs offering a role like “Data Optimizer” or “Asset Reviewer” with flexible hours and great pay, it feels like a lifeline, right?
But for many job seekers, this lifeline is actually a lure. A sophisticated network of scammers is now impersonating major industry players like CoinDesk, Coinbase, and potentially others like Viral Nation or Walmart Connect to trap victims in what’s known as a “Task Scam.”
The Hook: It Starts with a “Like”
The setup is disarmingly simple. You aren’t asked for money upfront. Instead, you’re given menial freelance tasks—subscribing to YouTube channels, liking videos, or basic data entry. It seems legitimate. You might even get paid a small amount initially to build trust.
But then, the script flips. You are introduced to the “CoinDesk Global Vip Task” or similar branded portals. Suddenly, the tasks aren’t about liking videos anymore; they involve “optimizing” crypto assets, and to participate, you need to upgrade to “VIP” status.
The Trap: “VIP” Means Very Important Payer

Here is where the nightmare begins. To access these “VIP tasks,” you are required to make prepayments into a crypto wallet. The promise? Massive commissions returned to you instantly.
But once your money is in, the rules change.
- The “Tax” Wall: When you try to withdraw your earnings (which often look huge on their fake dashboard), you are hit with a surprise “5% tax” or fees ranging from 10-40% of your profits.
- The “Blocking” Fee: If you refuse to pay, they invent hurdles like “Coinbase blocking fees” or “platform release charges,” claiming your funds are stuck until you pay just one more time.
It’s a classic sunk-cost trap. You pay to get your money back, but the finish line keeps moving.
The Reality Check: Real Brands Don’t Use Telegram
If you are currently in a Telegram group with “CoinDesk HR,” stop immediately.
- Official Warnings: CoinDesk has actively battled phishing sites mimicking their careers page and confirmed they do not recruit via Telegram.
- Coinbase’s Stance: Similarly, Coinbase has issued warnings about Telegram recruitment scams using their branding, stating unequivocally that they have no official Telegram presence for recruitment.
While specific alerts for brands like Viral Nation or Walmart Connect might not be as loud yet, the modus operandi remains the same. If a job requires you to pay to work, it’s not a job—it’s a scam.

Conclusion: Trust Your Gut, Not the “VIP” Badge
This isn’t just about losing money; it’s about the emotional toll of having your hope exploited.
The Takeaway? Legitimate employers will never ask you to pay for training, “VIP status,” or “blocking fees” in crypto. If the “Data Optimizer” role requires a deposit, optimize your life by blocking them immediately.
