Shri Ram V. Sutar is being widely discussed following his death on December 17, 2025, at the age of 100. He was one of India’s most influential sculptors and a Padma Bhushan awardee whose work shaped how modern India represents its history in public spaces.

Much of the attention focuses on his Padma Bhushan award (2016), frequently referenced in official tributes as recognition of his lifelong contribution to Indian sculpture.

Sutar was born in Maharashtra in 1925 and trained at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai. Unlike many artists of his generation, he chose public monuments over gallery art, creating sculptures designed for everyday civic life.

The Statue of Unity

His most prominent work is the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue at 182 metres, dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and inaugurated in 2018. Leaders and commentators describe it as a symbol of national unity and historical continuity.

Beyond this, Sutar created over 450 statues of Mahatma Gandhi worldwide and major monuments of Shivaji Maharaj, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, and others. His later projects, completed with his son, reflect continuity rather than closure.

Artists and historians also note his influence on the next generation. Sculptor Arun Yogiraj, who created the Ram Lalla idol installed in Ayodhya in 2024, publicly acknowledged Sutar as a role model.
There is little criticism in current discussions, reflecting broad agreement on his cultural standing.
