Mohammed bin Salman: The Future of Saudi Arabia
One of the prime goals of Mohammed bin Salman is to entirely transform Saudi the oil dependent Saudi economy to a more diversified and sustainable one. To achieve this he launched the Vision 2030 plan in 2016 which outlines a series of strategic objectives and initiatives to boost the private sector create jobs increase non-oil revenues and improve the quality of life for Saudis.
Vision 2030: Diversifying the Saudi Economy
According to the International Monetary Fund -IMF Saudi Arabia has made significant progress in implementing the Vision 2030 plan. The IMF praised the reforms for helping to create jobs and boost growth especially in the non oil sectors such as tourism entertainment and technology. The IMF also projected that Saudi Arabia’s real GDP growth will reach 4% in 2023 up from -3.9% in 2020.
However the Vision 2030 plan also faces some challenges and risks. The COVID 19 pandemic has affected the global demand for oil and reduced the fiscal revenues of Saudi Arabia. The plan also requires large public spending and investment which could increase the public debt and fiscal deficit of the kingdom. Moreover some of the reforms may face resistance from conservative segments of society who oppose social changes or fear losing their privileges.
Modernization of Saudi Arabia: Changing the Social Fabric
Another aspect of the agenda of Mohammed bin Salman’s is modernizing Saudi Arabia and make it more open as well as tolerant to different cultures and lifestyles. He has introduced several changes that have been welcomed by many Saudis especially the youth and women. For example he has allowed women to drive lifted the ban on cinemas and concerts opened up the country to tourism and relaxed some of the strict social rules that governed public behavior.
Mohammed bin Salman has initiated a lot of changes in Saudi Arabia in recent years. While the primary aim is to attract foreign investment and diversify the economy as well as enhance the country’s image he also aspires to be seen as a reformer who is determined to fight corruption extremism and terrorism.
In 2017 he spearheaded an anti-corruption campaign that led to the arrest of several notable princes businessmen and officials. In addition he has stated a desire to lead Saudi Arabia toward a more moderate form of Islam that respects human rights and adheres to modern ideals.
Here are some specific instances of the changes that Mohammed bin Salman has implemented:
Women have been granted the right to drive and travel without a male guardian.
The country has been opened up for tourism.
Numerous economic reforms have been launched including the privatization of state-owned enterprises and reduction of subsidies.
A crackdown on corruption has been initiated.
Measures have been taken to counter extremism including the funding of programs that promote moderate Islam.
There have been a variety of reactions to Mohammed bin Salmans reforms. While some individuals commend him for his efforts to modernize Saudi Arabia others criticize him for his human rights record and his involvement in the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.
Now lets wait and see when Mohammed bin Salman is able to make Saudi Arabia a modern and prosperous country.
Criticism has been directed towards the modernization efforts of Mohammed bin Salman mainly with accusations of them being selective and superficial. Accusations have as well been made about the use of his power to silence opponents and critics within and beyond the borders of Saudi Arabia. Several prominent Saudi activists, who advocated for women’s rights, political reforms, or human rights, have been arrested under his rule. Furthermore Mohammed bin Salman has been held responsible for escalating regional tensions with Iran and Qatar as well as Yemen and Lebanon.
Human Rights Record of Mohammed bin Salman: Facing Scrutiny and Pressure
Perhaps the most controversial issue that surrounds Mohammed bin Salman is his human rights record. Mohammed bin Salmans actions are connected to human rights violations sparking international condemnation and widespread outrage. The most heart wrenching of these is the tragic demise of Jamal Khashoggi a Saudi journalist and critic of the Saudi government. Khashoggi was a beacon of free speech and a voice for the voiceless but met a cruel end within the confines of the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018. This loss of Khashoggi is deeply felt by journalistic community all over the planet as its stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who have the guts to speak truth to power. A CIA report released in 2021 concluded that Mohammed bin Salman approved and likely ordered the murder.
The murder of Khashoggi has greatly tarnished Mohammed bin Salmans reputation and strained his relations with some of his allies especially United States. President Joe Biden has vowed to reassess US Saudi relations and hold accountable those responsible for Khashoggi’s death. Biden has also suspended some arms sales to Saudi Arabia that were approved by former President Donald Trump. Biden is expected to meet with Mohammed bin Salman in person soon to discuss this issue among others.
Countries valuing economic reforms and strategic interests have chosen to continue to support Mohammed bin Salman despite criticism. A prime example is India, which greeted Mohammed bin Salmans 2023 visit with enthusiasm. This is the visit thats seen as a chance to fortify bilateral relations and foster cooperation in sectors like energy as well as trade and investment besides security and counterterrorism.
The G20 summit in India during September 2023, eagerly awaited the participation of Mohammed bin Salman. Its a splendid stage for him to exhibit leadership and articulate his vision for Saudi Arabia and to the world. Its a golden opportunity to spotlight the positive transformations he has brought about and his future plans and his participation as well highlights the fact that others are taking notice of his efforts and that his reforms would impact Saudi Arabia’s development positively.
