In the recent municipal elections sweeping across Maharashtra, the BJP painted the state saffron—except for one fortress: Malegaon.
Here, a new political phenomenon has emerged, one that even Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had warned about. It wasn’t the Congress, nor the NCP, nor even Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM that stole the show. It was a party formed barely a year ago, with a name that leaves no ambiguity about its identity: The Islam Party.
The Visual Proof: See For Yourself
The Rise of “ISLAM” (Indian Secular Largest Assembly of Maharashtra)
Technically, “ISLAM” is an acronym. But politically, it was a masterstroke of branding. Led by former Congress MLA Sheikh Asif, the party emerged as the single largest force in the Malegaon Municipal Corporation with 35 seats, pushing the established AIMIM to second place with 21 seats.
| Party | Seats Won |
|---|---|
| Islam Party | 35 |
| AIMIM | 21 |
| Shiv Sena | 18 |
| Congress | 3 (Collapsed from 28) |
| BJP | 2 |
Why Did Malegaon Reject the National Parties?
Malegaon has always been a political anomaly. With a 78% Muslim population, the city’s politics revolved for decades around two families: the Nihal Ahmeds (Socialists) and the Sheikh Rashids (Congress).
But the 2024 elections marked a decisive shift. The voter fatigue with Congress is palpable. The Grand Old Party, which held 28 seats in 2017, has been decimated to just 3. The vote has consolidated almost entirely (70% of seats) behind explicitly Muslim-centric parties—AIMIM and the Islam Party.
The Catalyst: Kirit Somaiya’s Campaign
The BJP’s aggressive campaign led by Kirit Somaiya, who alleged that Malegaon was harboring “Bangladeshi infiltrators,” backfired. Instead of polarizing the Hindu vote (which is small here), it galvanized the Muslim vote. Sheikh Asif led the counter-protests on the ground, effectively positioning his Islam Party as the true protector of local interests, while AIMIM was seen as less aggressive.
The “Islam” vs. “AIMIM” Rivalry
This election proves that the “Muslim Vote Bank” is no longer a monolith controlled by Congress. It is now a competitive market.
- Mufti Ismail (AIMIM) represents the religious-political establishment.
- Sheikh Asif (Islam Party) represents the aggressive, localized breakaway faction.
Interestingly, there is a theory in political circles that this fracture actually helps the BJP in the long run. If Muslim votes are split between AIMIM and the Islam Party in assembly/Lok Sabha elections, the division could allow BJP or its allies to slip through the gaps—a strategy that almost worked in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
The Future of Malegaon
With the support of the Congress (3) and Samajwadi Party (5), the Islam Party has crossed the majority mark of 43 to claim the Mayor’s post. But the message to the rest of Maharashtra is clear: In minority-dominated belts, the Congress is dying, and regional, identity-based parties are the new power brokers.
