Fake Lakshadweep Cruise Scam: How a Hyderabad Tourist Lost ₹2.4 Lakhs to a “Google Trap”
Imagine booking a luxury cruise for your family, paying the advance, and then realizing the entire website—and your money—has vanished into thin air. This isn’t a plot from a movie; it’s the harsh reality for a resident of Kachiguda, Hyderabad, who lost a staggering ₹2,42,488 in a “Fake Cruise Booking” scam that mimicked the popular Cordelia Cruises with terrifying accuracy.
The Hidden Connection
This incident casts a shadow over a destination known for its unearthly beauty. This reminds us of the hidden gems we explored in our guide on 7 Surreal Beaches You Won’t Believe Exist, where the reality is often stranger than fiction. While those beaches are real, the websites claiming to take you there often aren’t.

The “Google Trap”: Why You Can’t Trust the First Result
It started innocently enough. On December 26, 2025, the victim was searching Google for “Cruise to Lakshadweep.” Like many of us, he likely skipped the ads and clicked on a result that looked official.

The website claimed to offer premium cruise packages from Kochi to Lakshadweep and Mumbai. It had the photos, the logos, and the professional look of the real Cordelia Cruises site. Believing it to be genuine, he booked a trip for four people and transferred an initial advance of ₹23,680.
The “Permit” Lie and the “Glitch” Loop

Once the victim was hooked, the scammers deployed a classic “drip-feed” tactic. They didn’t just ask for the full amount; they created urgent, believable hurdles.
Official Public Advisory: How to Stay Safe
The Hyderabad City Police has issued an urgent advisory to prevent further victims. Please read this carefully before booking your next trip.
Always book cruise packages only through the official website (cordeliacruises.com or lakshadweep.irctc.co.in) or authorized travel agents.
Be cautious of websites found through search results or advertisements that ask for advance payments in multiple installments.
Do not make payments for permit letters, children charges, or add-ons unless they are clearly mentioned in the official booking confirmation.
Never trust claims of technical issues, payment failures, or “assured refunds” used to demand repeated payments.
Genuine companies do not demand cancellation charges upfront to process refunds. They deduct it from the amount you already paid.
Verify customer care numbers from the official website only and avoid relying on WhatsApp communications initiated by strangers.
